Dr.
Charles Baltimore, Jr. has been leading mission trips to Hospital St. Croix
in Leogan, Haiti since 1996. Dr. Dennis O'Neal and Susan Woolard have gone
to Haiti on one or more medical mission trips, as well as Betty Brame, who
also organizes supplies. Office Manager, Linda Jewell solicits donations of
equipment and supplies from various individuals and companies. Alcon
laboratories of Fort Worth, Texas, for example, graciously contributes a
large portion of the medical and surgical supplies along with local
pharmacies such as Hospital Pharmacy, Family Pharmacy, Kerr Drug, and
Chocowinity Pharmacy. While in Haiti, a battery powered, handheld automatic refractometer is used to measure the strength glasses someone might need in order to see well. Thousands of pairs of repaired and reconditioned used glasses are donated by the Lions International Foundation to dispense to Haitians seen at those clinics. In addition, patients would be screened for eye diseases, such as glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, and treated as indicated. Dr. Ed Buckley, one of the best pediatric ophthalmologists in the United States has accompanied Dr. Baltimore on approximately five of these trips, and focuses primarily on pediatric cataract surgery. The medical mission trips are multi-focused, with generally one or more gynecologists, internal medical specialist, dermatologists, and nurse anesthetists attending and providing their expertise to Haitian patients in need of their specialized services.
